Reading and Writing the Sonnet In-Person
A two-part workshop with poet Deb Diemont.
From Shakespeare and Petrarch to Edna St. Vincent Millay and Langston Hughes; from Emma Lazarus to Terrance Hayes and beyond, the sonnet has been, for centuries, a container for love, argument, contemplation, wit and experimentation. Practiced traditionally, in iambic pentameter with standard rhyme schemes, or in modern free-verse "fourteeners," the sonnet remains a popular and ever-evolving form. In this course, we'll read some classic and contemporary masters of the sonnet, and we'll write our own. All experience levels are welcome, from beginners to pros!
The class will meet for two consecutive weeks. The first week will focus on learning about the sonnet and beginning to draft your own. The second week, we'll continue our talk about craft and share our sonnets with each other.
Registration is encouraged but not required.
